“Motivation Muscle”

There are times when we all need some motivation, especially on those days where it feels harder than normal to keep going; hard to stay on track.

One of our top tips at Brain Biscuits Coaching is to create a “motivation muscle” that you can use that fuels you with positivity when staying on track seems hard.

This needs to be something that is easy to access quickly, for example:

 ·        fill a bag with things that inspire you to keep you on track, this might have your gym stuff ready to go, with a charged I-pod and headphones all packed so on those bad days you just grab it and go work out, run, move, whatever works for you to clear the negative fog.

or

·        A vision board is great as it visually shows why you are doing this!  Allow yourself a moment to look at all the images that represent what you want, and just why it’s worth continuing!

or

·        Create a Diary or Journal that shows the steps you have taken so far, and the stages you have reached.  Use this to track your progress. Look at it to see how far you have come.

 Or, all of the above!

Basically, anything that makes you feel positive and boost your mood instantly is a motivation muscle for you.

It is also worth factoring this in to your weekly lifestyle as a success tool.

It’s also a good idea to see what the triggers are that cause the feeling of being deflated, maybe review this trigger and see if there are any changes you could make?

Remember regular motivation is key to your goal setting and of course discipline.

Your “Creative Diet”

When was the last time you did something creative?

Can you remember what it was and how much you actually enjoyed it?

Well what about doing something creative daily?

What about ensuing you have a “creative diet”?

We always look at the word “diet” and associate it with food when the word ‘diet’ actually comes from an ancient Greek word meaning “a mode of living”.

The word “creative” means “to use imagination and ideas to create something”

A “creative diet” therefore is your mode of living with a life full of ideas, imagination and energy.

So when we at Brain Biscuits talk about your “creative diet”, we mean what amounts of creativity are you using throughout your daily routine to feed/fuel your mind and imagination?  How do you express yourself, and what do you enjoy?

We ask our clients these questions as it is so important for them to consider creative pursuits if this is something they feel they would enjoy within their goal setting.  We do this as its fuels a positive mindset as being creative  allows us time to connect to something that we use as a way of expressing ourselves.

Remember there is no end to the list of what you could do to be creative!

Most creative tasks are something visual, this helps see your progress.   Whether it’s the completed jumper you have knitted or the song you have written or played, or the dish you have cooked!

So go ahead try it!  Get creative, feed this into your day make it an important part of your daily routine, self expression and of you!

Don’t forget your moment to “Pause”

It’s a great idea to just take a moment!

A “pause moment” so you can see all the beautiful things around you.

Our lives can very often be lived at 100 miles an hour and moments can be missed.

We recommend whenever you can to make time to just connect to the world around you
(your pause moment).

This moment “your pause” is so you don’t miss the wonderful things life offers you for free daily, such as nature.  All these things help inspire you and give you sensory feedback and fuel your Neuro-linguistic programming   – what you see, hear and feel etc.

These moments, when enjoyed fully really do remind us that “the best things in life are free” and make us truly feel alive.

The key is to learn how to ensure you don’t miss it, from the flowers, trees to the sky and all the visual variations it has!   Make this time frequently (daily) for your “pause” allowing you the time to take in all that is there for you to enjoy and could really inspire you.

An exercise to start with;

Tomorrow start with your garden (and then you could widen this to the local park, the nearest beach, forest or route into work) and make a mental log of all the things you see around you and how they make you feel?  What sounds did you hear, did you have a favourite part to this moment?  Then enjoy this visual menu, maybe event capture it with a photo.

Here’s one of my most recent favourite pause moments:

Don’t forget to look to the sky as there really are no limits!  While you are there why not reach for a star or two!

Your centre, it’s so important!

amusement park attraction big black and white

Try imaging your life in the form of a circle, visualise a Ferris-wheel metaphorically speaking. The centre mechanism is what powers the whole motor to make wheel move round!  The centre is made up of different mechanisms which in this metaphor represents your core values, life priorities, principles, morals and beliefs (basically your centre).  All of these keep you being you!  The centre fuels us and motivates our life and as a results gives us drive to set aims, ambitions and goals (moves the wheel).

The centre is so important, it’s important to keep it strong, grounded and functional.  Anything that works in harmony with your core personality fundamentals is going to do positive things for you and drive things forward and keep your life moving in the right direction.  Thus allow a harmonious rotation (hence visualising the Ferris-wheel ), positivity feeds off positivity!

In personal development coaching it is important to look at all our clients fundamental building blocks, their core values and help them base their goal setting around these.  We use a number of techniques to do so.

Make Goals with “HEART “

One of the first big goals I set was wanting to complete a 5 k run. I was a non-runner at the time, so I had to make sure I did things to break the goal down, and be sensible with where I was at in terms of fitness levels; what time I could give to the training involved, especially around my life commitments. My tip would also be to set stages/steps and find ways to monitor progress.

I found using a running App a great way for this type of goal and tracking my progress.  I also liked watching others, such as lifestyle bloggers who had used the same App for a 5k training program.  Seeing how they found their journey with the training they set for themselves (goals steps), and it gave me inspiration and the motivation to complete my own steps that lead me to my main goal “run 5k”.   I was so excited because the first ever 5k I ran was for a charity that’s close to my heart so this goal supported  my core values.  What  was also great was with something physical you can feel and see the results!  So I knew when I had reached it as it was measurable.  I also was lucky to be given a little keepsake medal for achieving it. This is great visual evidence of a goal being met!   Every time I see it I am reminded of where I started and how far I have come!  My goal was set with HEART which is a coaching model which helps you set your goals with all your true values and abilities in mind; with the basis around making small manageable steps to get your goals (particularly larger goals), achieved.  I recommend both the coach to 5k App and “virtual runner” for charity runs as they allow anyone of any ability to complete various running tasks, steps, races etc.

The HEART Model

The Heart Model is great to look at for personal development coaching when setting goals.   I like to use it with clients. An example of some of the model is below.

Honest: Is the goal right for you?  Does it fit with your core values and beliefs?

Exact: What will you exactly need to accomplish your goals?  What steps do you need to take?

Authentic:  Is the goal consistent with your values?  Does it reflect what you really want?

Realistic:  Is the goal realistic, do you have the time, energy, and motivation to complete this goal?

Timely:  What is the deadline for this goal?  How long will each step take?  By when will you accomplish these steps?
